QUANTUM MOMENT

Quantum Moment: a light, uplifting podcast featuring heartfelt conversations that inspire and ignite your curiosity…

Quantum Moment inspires and encourages curious minds.

You will experience a Quantum Moment while listening to this podcast, filled with presence, curiosity, and passion.

Meet your Host Emcee, MC!

Mary Catherine (MC) Lorio is a quantum physicist and actress from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she first discovered her love for quantum physics, animation, acting, and the arts. She earned her A.B. in Physics and M.Eng. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Princeton University.

Her fascination with quantum physics began at fifteen, when a friend introduced her to Schrödinger’s Cat. The paradox sparked a curiosity that would shape her life. Searching for a science fair topic, she reached out to world-renowned quantum physicist Professor Jonathan Dowling at Louisiana State University—just as he had received funding to host a high school researcher and didn’t yet know where he’d find one. Serendipitously, her email arrived. That summer, MC became the first high school student to join the Quantum Science and Technologies (QST) group at LSU.

There, she experimentally performed the Quantum Eraser experiment and later simulated it using Mathematica. Her ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity and enthusiasm earned her numerous honors: first place at the Louisiana Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, three special awards at the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), a bronze medal at the 2017 International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project Olympiad (ISWEEEP), the Yale Science and Engineering Award, the Naval Research Award, and more. She presented her work at the International Conference on Quantum Computing and Measurement at LSU.

She went on to complete three additional physics research projects at LSU, winning the fourth place Grand Award in Physics at the 2018 ISEF for her work on simulating diffraction theory using Hermite–Gaussian modes of light, research she later presented in Toulouse, France.

At Princeton, she continued her quantum journey through research and internships at institutions such as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

MC believes that science and the arts are deeply intertwined—both rooted in storytelling, curiosity, and human connection. Whether she’s exploring the mysteries of the universe or performing for an audience, she is driven by a desire to understand and inspire.

So, let’s have a Quantum Moment together—and uncover the beauty of our world!

Episode 1

My Story: Animation, Quantum Physics, and Princeton :)!

On this episode, I talk about my journey into quantum physics-from presenting my quantum eraser project at international and national science fair competitions to majoring physics and master-ing in electrical and computer engineering at Princeton :)! I talk about my love of the arts and creating, and how the arts and sciences have always been important and inspiring to me. Thank you for listening to my story!

Episode 2

Introduction to Quantum Physics with Quantum Physicist Dr. Margarite LaBorde

In this episode of Quantum Moment, I met with Dr. Margarite LaBorde, a quntum physicist as well as a dear friend and lifelong mentor of mine. We talk about quantum computing and information, the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) paradox, and popular interpretations of quantum information. At the end of this episode, you will learn what makes quantum physics so "weird" yet fascinating, and why Einstein notoriously hated quantum physics. We hope you enjoy!

Episode 3

Solo Episode: Demystifying Quantum Mechanics, the Future of Quantum Tech, and the Importance of Staying Curious!

In this episode, I talk to you all about quantum physics and why there is currently a global race to build the first universal quantum computer. I explore my background in quantum physics and acting, and where I find these passions to overlap. Most importantly, I encourage you all to stay curious! You never know where your curiosity will lead you :)!

Episode 4

Camille Reeves: Getting into Princeton, Fashion, and Space Debris!

In this episode, I had a Quantum Moment with my great friend and Princeton classmate Camille Reeves, who studied astrophysics and works in public policy. We discuss her journey growing up in Columbus, Ohio, and finding her voice in STEM and beyond. She describes the path that ultimately lead her to study astrophysics at Princeton!

In our Quantum Moment, Camille and I talk about the intersection of science, politics, and purpose.

We dive into how to develop a personal sense of style in STEM and how perseverance, curiosity, and great mentors can make all the difference. Camille shares many other thoughtful insights about giving back, staying true to yourself, and embracing life as a Renaissance person with all your varying interests.

I loved this conversation so much, and I hope you enjoy it too!
